In Ainu’s life, traditional patterns and designs are seen on their clothes, furniture and utensils. Ainu’s designs are made with two basic patterns, “Moreu”(whirlpool) and “Aiushi”(thorn.)
When children become adolescence, girls start sewing and boys start making wood crafts. The traditional Ainu design was created through those craftsmanship and has been passed from generation to generation. Children learn how to draw patterns practicing on sand beach or ashes in fire place. The patterns are symbols of the Ainu people’s rich and profound spiritual culture.
